Freeze identity theft with added security
STILLWATER, Okla. – As of January 2007 any consumer in Oklahoma can place a security freeze on their credit report to help prevent identity theft.
The definition of a security freeze is that files cannot be shared with potential creditors, said Sissy Osteen, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service resource management specialist.
“Security freezes can help prevent identity theft,” she said. “Many businesses won’t open credit accounts without first checking a consumer’s credit history. If credit files are frozen and someone has your Social Security number and name, the thief will not be able to acquire credit in your name.”
To place a freeze on an account a letter must be written to the three credit bureaus. Credit bureaus charge a $10 fee to place or remove a security freeze, unless you are at least 65 years old or prove you are a victim of identity theft and then there is no charge.
To provide proof you are a victim of identity theft, a copy of the police report, investigative report or a complaint to a law enforcement agency should be included, Osteen said.
The three credit bureau office addresses are:
- Equifax Security Freeze: P.O. Box 105788, Atlanta, GA 30348
- Experian Security Freeze: P.O. Box 9554, Allen, TX 75013
- Trans Union Security Freeze: P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790
Five days after receiving the letter, the credit reporting agencies will place a freeze providing credit reports to potential creditors. Ten days from receiving the letter to place the freeze, credit reporting agencies will send a letter of confirmation and unique personal identification number (PIN) or password.
“Once your files are frozen, you may open new credit accounts, but you will have to get your freeze lifted,” Osteen said. “Credit bureaus must lift the freeze no later than three business days from receiving the request.”
Security freezes have no time limit and will remain in effect until they are removed.
“A security freeze is a good way to prevent identity theft and protect personal information,” Osteen said.
