OSU showcases opportunities at the Oklahoma Youth Expo
STILLWATER, Okla. –Where can you find Pistol Pete and Bullet along with current and future Oklahoma State University students? Many would think an OSU football game, but guess again. Try the Oklahoma Youth Expo – the worlds largest junior livestock show program.
The purpose of OSU Day at the OYE was to showcase the vast majors, organizations and career opportunities available in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
“Many of our current students in CASNR have roots that stem from their involvement with 4-H and FFA programs and the livestock industry,” said Robyn Sites, coordinator of prospective student services, CASNR. “We wanted to encourage prospective students involved at the Oklahoma Youth Expo to continue their passion for agriculture as a future student enrolled at OSU and in CASNR.”
More than 15 different departments in CASNR, organizations and clubs featured an interactive booth or display for students, parents and alumni.
Sites said it was great to see younger children participating in fun, informative activities ranging from food science and soil erosion to older students visiting with coaches from OSU’s national award- winning judging teams.
In addition to the clubs and departments, the Oklahoma AgrAbility project had a dummy steer roping event. Contestants wore glasses that simulated a vision impairment that allowed them to understand the everyday challenges a person with a disability faces.
“Having this booth at the OYE really helped raise awareness for the programs we have to offer with AgrAbility,” said Traci Naile, Oklahoma AgrAbility project coordinator. “This event was well received and it was encouraging to see so many people interested in the many opportunities OSU has to offer.”
We hope more than anything, we are able to spread the positive word about the majors in CASNR, the career opportunities in agriculture and showcase the wonderful family environment and excitement that is created when a large group of OSU fans gather together, Sites said.
Due to the positive comments during the event, the support of the OYE staff and the involvement from the students, staff and faculty, OSU Day is being considered as an annual event.
Sites said this was a wonderful day and as long as the students, parents and alumni are excited, then CASNR will be proud to host OSU Day at the OYE.“I believe that when you can build that much enthusiasm in one event, a positive impact can be felt. We hope that students will know that we value the efforts they put into their show projects, that we care about their futures and really want them at OSU,” she said. “We hope that their destination for success will be the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.”
