‘Tis the season to generate waste

STILLWATER, Okla. – With the holiday season upon us, it is easy to see why Americans generate more waste during this time of the year.

On average, Americans generate an extra 5 million tons of waste during the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, said Sarah Kimball, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service coordinator for solid waste management education.

“This is the time of year when we simply generate an excess of waste,” Kimball said. “However, with a little planning and effort, Oklahomans can do their part to help reduce waste and preserve landfill space.”

When it comes to giving presents, try to give consumable gifts. Movie tickets or zoo and museum passes are just a couple of examples. Regift unused gifts from last year. If purchasing new gifts, try to select those that do not have a lot of waste packaging or those packaged in recycled material. Environmentally educational toys are great choices for children.

Kimball also said that attending special events such as museums or other cultural or entertainment activities is a good way to spend holiday time and these activities do not contribute to excess waste.

“Not only do memberships for zoos and museums not clutter the environment, they also provide families with an opportunity to spend quality time together,” Kimball said.

Families who plan to put up a Christmas tree should consider using a live tree that can be replanted after the holidays.

“If you want to cut one down, choose a cedar tree that needs to be cut to clear land,” she said. “Branches that are trimmed off the bottom of the tree so it will fit in the tree stand can be used for decorations elsewhere. Last year’s Christmas cards also are a great source of material that can be used for decorating your home.”

Many gifts on children’s wish lists require batteries. Consumers may want to consider purchasing rechargeable cadmium batteries and a solar charger for these toys and games.

Another way to conserve energy during the holiday season is to put Christmas tree lights and outdoor lights on timers. Also, if you are planning a holiday party in your home, turn down the heat before guests arrive and let body heat help warm the house once they arrive.

Once the holidays are a distant memory, many Oklahomans will still be finding a variety of catalogues in their mailboxes. Call the company and ask to be removed from the mailing list.

“The holiday season can be such an enjoyable time with family and friends. Taking a few extra steps to reduce waste is a great gift to the environment,” Kimball said.
