4-H Family Horse Camp slated May 26-28

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma 4-H’ers and their families who enjoy camping with horses should make plans to attend the Statewide 4-H Family Horse Camp slated May 26-28 at the Great Salt Plains State Park near Jet, Okla.

The camp is intended to educate youth and adults in camping with horses with minimal damage to land or water quality, said Tommy Puffinbarger, Alfalfa County Extension educator, agriculture/4-H youth development.

“Camping is a great family activity and this camp will help 4-H’ers and their families learn more about safety, stabling, tying, trail riding, overnight camping, environmental concerns, grounds keeping, biodiversity, seed travel, watersheds, photography and integrated pest management concerns,” Puffinbarger said.

The camp is open to 4-H’ers ages 9 and up, along with their parents, guardian or other adult relative. Siblings ages 7-9 who are enrolled in the 4-H Cloverbud program are eligible to attend the camp.

Camp registration is $50 per person and is due by May 15. The fee covers registration, meals and required insurance. Individuals under the age of 9 are not insured and horses are not covered with any insurance. In addition, a current negative coggins test is required on all horses and must be shown to staff before unloading.

The workshops that are planned for the camp will be both educational and fun. David Freeman, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension Service equine specialist, will be on hand to share his expertise, along with a number of other Extension professionals and 4-H members.

“One of the great things about this camp is that it’s held at a different location each year,” he said. “This provides all of the participants to observe the diversity of Oklahoma’s terrain, trees, rangeland and water sources. Following the camp the participants will have a better understanding of the impact to the environment while camping with horses.”

For more information about the camp, contact Puffinbarger at 580-596-3131.
